Notes and bios

Two Scenes from Vertical Sprawl Vertical Sprawl is an evening-length work that explores the consequence of the human urge to reach for excess and control and how it affects everything around them. Overconsumption and greed lead to scarcity and conflict – without resolution there is social and environmental collapse. Out of the desolation emerge a new order that can break the cycle or just start it again. The piece is informed by a number of narrative strands that are delicately woven through the piece as disparate as the Easter Island Birdman myth, the extinction of languages, Wagner’s Ring and the Miami real estate boom and bust cycle.

Both Maloney and choreographer Crystal Sepulveda used his music in the Movement Lab Series in summer 2008. The composer collaborated with artist and partner Xavier Cortada over the past few years. A joint residency in Antarctica (December 2006 – January 2007) resulted in a number of new works including Erebus for piano, trombone and electronics (premiered at the Subtropics Festival 19), the 12-part electro-acoustic work titled Ice Paintings (inspired by Cortada’s series of the same name) and Terra Australis Incognita for orchestra. Another work, Longitudinal Installation (a sound installation) opened at the United Nations’ “Envisioning Change” exhibit in Oslo, Norway; the show is currently at the BOZAR Center for Fine Arts in Brussels and will end up at the Field Museum in Chicago in 2008.
